Our local expert on vertebrate locomotion, Professor Miriam Ashley-Ross, was quoted on July 8, 2016, in an article on mudfish locomotion titled “Did early land animals get a leg up by using their tails?”  The article was published in the Christina Science Monitor. Why study mudskippers? These fish use their front fins to propel themselves on land, so it’s possible that they can provide insight into the transition of vertebrates from water to land. New research has revealed that their tails are also an important part of their locomotor equation, especially when the mudskippers need to go uphill. Here’s a link to the article if you want to learn more.
