The 112th annual meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science took place on March 27-28, 2015, at Wake Forest Biotech Place in downtown Winston-Salem. Participation in North Carolina Academy of Science events is a long-standing tradition in the Wake Forest Department of Biology. This year no fewer than four of our students won awards for outstanding presentations at the meeting. The Department of Biology extends its heartiest congratulations to Sean Taylor, for his First Place poster presentation in Zoology, Ecology, and Environmental Science (Effect of increased salinity exposure on leaf tissue and water status in Bald Cypress seedlings, with Mary Jane Carmichael, Joseph White, and William K. Smith); Ben Rob, for his First Place oral presentation in Ecology (Effects of fungal endophyte on antagonistic modulation of SA and JA pathways, with Michael Anderson); Lauren Doolittle, for her First Place oral presentation in Genetics and Molecular Biology (Elucidating the ARF7 transcription factor network that controls lateral root formation in Arabidopsis, with Gloria Muday); and to Kathleen DiNapoli for her Third Place oral presentation in Genetics and Molecular Biology (Tomato mutants and introgression lines provide evidence for a role of flavonoids in lateral root development, with Greg Maloney and Gloria Muday). Special thanks to all of the faculty and graduate students who mentored these successful undergraduate researchers.
