Honors and Awards, Department of Biology 2016

The Department of Biology is proud to announce the award winners for 2016.  Honors graduates have not only distinguished themselves academically, but in important research endeavors and outreach. This year, our graduates with Honors in Biology are Emily Felvey, Tracey Pu, Greg Sanda, Kathleen DiNapoli, Avery Quirk, Tripp Henderson, and Emily Fishman.

Kathleen DiNapoli, BS ‘2016, was awarded the Carolina Biological Supply Research award which goes to most distinguished undergraduate senior.  Dan Griffith, Ph.D. ‘2016, was awarded the Elton Cocke Scholarship for Outstanding Graduate Student which recognizes his achievements in Research, as well as dedication to service, and outreach activities.

The Carolina Biological Supply Company Research Award

Kathleen DiNapoli

DiNapoli is published in scientific journals and is a frequent presenter at national science meetings for her work in tomato root growth.  DiNapoli was awarded a prestigious honor by the Beckman foundation for her research.  Kathleen worked with Dr. Gloria Muday in various outreach projects in the local schools teaching genetics to science classes and along with other WFU Biology majors worked to establish and run a STEM club for young women at a local middle school in Winston Salem.

Daniel Griffith

Dan is known for his research in the Serengeti on savanna grasses and has a number of publications in scientific journals.  Dan was a presenter in Dr. Michael Anderson’s Serengeti Wildlife outreach program presented at elementary schools in Winston Salem and via teleconference to several schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Dan enjoys programming in the R language and has several libraries that have garnered strong interest in the scientific community.
