Laboratory Manager

Summary: Coordinates operations of teaching and research laboratories in Biology and Chemistry. Ensures that equipment and supplies are available in a timely fashion. Manages laboratory budgets and inventories. Communicates with department chairs.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees laboratories in new interdisciplinary teaching and research space.
  • Assists with design of new lab experiments and have familiarity with troubleshooting for basic biology and chemistry teaching lab instrumentation.
  • Coordinates the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to laboratory operations. Purchase of supplies for all undergraduate teaching labs and assists with supplies purchases for research labs.  Ensuring that teaching labs are prepped.   Assisting and sometimes supervising graduate student teaching assistants.
  • Serves as chemical safety officer for building and works with Environmental Health & Safety personnel to manage waste stream.
  • Responsible for safety training and compliance.
  • Maintains accurate and complete budgetary records.
  • Works with property management personnel to report building maintenance concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • BS. in a science discipline. Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry are essential, as is some knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Skills in the safe and accurate use of biological and chemical reagents.
  • Small lab equipment repair experience preferred.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a group as part of team.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and online ordering programs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Moderate physical activity including unloading inventory.
  • The candidate will work with low levels of solvents and hazardous chemicals.

Accountabilities:

  • Provides training and assists in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate student workers.
