WFU Biology PhD student Scott Cory, and undergraduate researchers Taylor Catalano and Denas Kisonas (rising sophomores, class of 2019), spent their summer at Roan High Bluff in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. They were studying the ecophysiological mechanisms of mortality of Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) and red spruce (Picea rubens) seedlings. Their research is yielding important insights into how this high-elevation spruce-fir forest will respond to climate change. All are members of the laboratory of WFU Babcock Professor of Botany William K. Smith. This is a great example of how Wake Forest graduate programs enhance undergraduate education.
