Observational

Southern Magnolias

Field site

Our study subject is a Magnolia grandiflora (the Southern Magnolia), behind Winston Hall, WFU, Winston-Salem NC. (Lat: 36.13, Long: -80.28, Figure 1). Leaves are collected, demographic data are recorded, and the leaves are immediately processed.

Demographic data on leaf samples

At the time of collection, the compass point and height from the ground are recorded. We have mostly sampled the south and north side of the tree. Currently the heights are all “as high as we can reach.” After washing and trimming of the petiole, the wet weight of the leaf is recorded. The leaf is photographed in black and white with a size reference for determining the leaf surface area in ImageJ. [http://ucanr.edu/sites/fruittree/files/49325.pdf]

In some cases, the leaf has been photographed in color with a color standard.
